Engineering comprises a number of disciplines and historically civil, mechanical, electrical and chemical were the traditional areas of study up to the late 1960s. However, with the adoption of new materials and technologies, the range of engineering disciplines is steadily increasing. Engineers Australia's 'Areas of Practice' provides a list of modern 'disciplines' and is available from the National Engineering Register (NER) at NER Areas of Practice Search.

Associated with these 'Areas of Practice', Engineering Heritage Australia has developed a list of the industry/business areas that are delivered by Australian engineering expertise. This list titled 'Engineering Heritage Themes' is used as as a set of 'Categories' throughout this website to enable researchers/readers to collate all webpages that relate to a specific area of interest. A detailed list of the 'Sub-Themes/Categories' and the type of assets included in each is available here.

Various States have also developed Thematic Histories that tell the story of the development of different types of infrastructure in their State and linkages for the stories that are available are provided in the table below:
