ENGINEERING HERITAGE AUSTRALIA (EHA)

Engineering Heritage Australia (EHA) is a Special Interest Centre established by Engineers Australia, the peak body for the engineering profession in Australia. The role of EHA as described in Section 4.14 of the General Regulations is to:

  • identify strategies and recommend to the Board actions to address the specific needs of their identified area of engineering practice;
  • facilitate the provision of high-level technical advice, undertake research and/or contribute to public policy and participate in expert panels, committees or forums;
  • identify gaps or emerging needs in skills and knowledge for their identified area of engineering practice to facilitate the CPD provided by Engineers Australia for members; and
  • represent Engineers Australia in the wider community in line with Engineers Australia’s policies, and nominate members for appointment to external bodies as required.

The roles and responsibilities of EHA Committee members are described in the document available here.

EHA’s vision is to be recognised as the expert group for the practice of heritage and conservation engineering and for information and advice on all aspects of Australian engineering heritage and history.

EHA is led by a national committee that is progressing the following areas of activity:

Heritage Engineering: application of engineering knowledge, skills and techniques to the conservation; including maintenance, restoration and/or adaptive reuse, of all items of cultural significance to the community;
Engineering Heritage: identification, assessment and recording of those items of heritage that owe their existence to the theory and practise of engineering;
Engineering History: documentation of stories of Australian engineering people, items and knowledge with provision to enable sharing; and
Communications: to ensure EHA’s vision of being recognised by engineers and the Australian community is achieved.

EHA is supported by Branch Committees in Queensland, Newcastle, Sydney, Canberra, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia. Terms of Reference for the Branch Committees are available here.

EHA WEBSITE

The purpose of this website is to enable access to engineering heritage knowledge by the general public, social historians, engineering heritage historians and heritage engineering professionals. The website will also provide access to an archive of information developed by EHA’s recognition, oral history, award, conference and communication programs.

To provide for the management and operation of this website, EHA has approved a established an EHA Website Committee. This Committee has developed an 'EHA Website Guideline' which documents the websites governance arrangements and an 'EHA Website Operating Manual' which describes how the website is maintained and provides information to assist webpage editors in a consistent approach when adding various types of information to the website.

A copy of the EHA Website Guideline and Operating Manual with Appendices and Work Instructions as at 9 September 2024 is available here.
