From Engineering Heritage Australia

Heritage engineering is a specialized engineering discipline and area of practice describing a wide range of methods and practices for conserving and restoring historical buildings, products and machines. There are no undergraduate courses in Australia currently (2025), however engineers in other disciplines can acquire heritage engineering credentials by participating in courses, some of which are run by Engineering Heritage Australia.

The discipline is expanding steadily as more governments and organisations in Australia develop an interest in preserving historical artefacts. Heritage restoration has been a strong theme in Australian architecture through the latter half of the 20th century as rapid development threatened to obliterate historical streetscapes worth preserving.

You can learn more about heritage engineering by browsing pages on this website. Check out this page with extensive resources and practice guides.

Most State/Division Branches of Engineering Heritage Australia have developed and made available knowledge of their State's engineering achievements through presentations, seminars, site tours and local conferences. In recent years Engineers Australia has captured a number of webinar presentation on the EA OnDemand system. When using this system, open the Filter and under Sub Channel select the option of ‘Heritage’. This will present you with 14 (as at May 2024) heritage focussed videos that can be watched for free if an EA member, or for a small charge for non-members.
