Coal Mining in Tasmania

From Engineering Heritage Australia

The earliest known mining activity after European settlement was the mining of coal by convicts in the Tasman Peninsula Region not far from Port Arthur. This activity ceased before the closure of Port Arthur. Although collieries were to be found elsewhere in the colony/state, most most tended to be concentrated around Final where coal mining continues at a modest level even today. The output is used for the Boyer paper mill and the cement works at Railton.
