Silver-Lead Mining in Tasmania

From Engineering Heritage Australia

The location most associated with silver in Tasmania was Zeehan where there were large deposits of silver bound up with zinc. Significant deposits were also found nearby at Dundas. The deposit at Zeehan was discovered in 1882, but the initial problem was access. A road of sorts was constructed to Trial Harbour, but this had many difficulties. Transport improved with the opening of a railway from Strahan (On Macquarie Harbour) and another from Burnie.

A number of smelters were constructed around the town and most mining activities ceased around World War One.
