Implementation of Heritage Engineering Solutions (Sydney 2024)

Overview

This course will introduce engineers and other professionals to heritage materials and construction methods, including the ways in which heritage materials deteriorate, and processes for conserving them.

Whether this is the first step on your journey in the world of engineering heritage or a continuation of a passion, this course will help you expand your skills, grow your network, and uncover amazing parts of our Australian story through the lens of engineering.

Implementation of Heritage Engineering Solutions is a professional development course co-designed by Engineering Heritage Australia and the University of Canberra. The course includes sessions relevant to engineers of all disciplines and is structured to include self-paced online learning and a two-day on-site practical workshop led by experienced heritage engineering practitioners.

The next course will include a 2-day workshop on site at Cockatoo Island (Sydney) looking at heritage materials and construction methods, modes of deterioration and approaches to conservation.

Successful completion of this course along with the Introduction to Engineering Heritage[1] course will allow qualified engineers to be eligible for accreditation as Heritage and Conservation Engineers and listed in the EA National Engineering Register.

How you’ll learn

This learning will be delivered in hybrid format

  • Pre-reading – material prepared by presenters
  • Q&A Session – opportunity to ask presenters (Zoom)
  • Assignment – initial condition assessment on subject of your choice (feedback will be provided)
  • Onsite workshop – Face-to-face presentations and demonstrations by experienced professional heritage engineers
  • Final report – in format suitable for presentation to client (feedback provided)

Facilitators

The course is administered through the University of Canberra on-line learning site with content provided by experienced Engineers Australia members.

  • Dr Alison Wain - Associate Professor of Cultural and Creative Futures, University of Canberra, Discipline Lead Cultural Heritage and Conservation. Her research focuses on the challenges of preserving and interpreting engineering, industrial and science heritage.
  • Glenn Rigden - Mechanical Engineer with 40 years’ experience in large process industries. He has extensive heritage engineering experience in the field of large mechanical plant and steam power and applies his expertise at the Sydney Heritage Fleet where he is also a certified marine steam engineer. He has contributed for 22 years as a member of the Engineering Heritage Australia Sydney Committee including as Chairman.
  • Eamonn Madden - With over 40 years of experience in structural and heritage work in Ireland, the UK, and Australia, Eamonn is a Director and former MD of Partridge. His expertise includes heritage, conservation and adaptive reuse and is currently Chair of Engineering Heritage Sydney and a member of the Engineers Australia National Heritage Committee. He continues to lecture in structural engineering in both Ireland and Australia.

  1. This course is a complementary course to the Introduction to Engineering Heritage short course also offered by UC. However, it is not a prerequisite for this course and either one can be completed first.
