Osmiridium Mining in Tasmania
From Engineering Heritage Australia
Osmiridium is a naturally occurring alloy of iridium and osmium. It is very rare with the main source being at Tyenna north-west of Maydena. Osmiridium is very hard and corrosion resistant and a major use was for the tips of gold ink pen nibs and in certain munitions. Mining occurred mainly in the 1920s and 1930s.
