Gold Mining in Tasmania

From Engineering Heritage Australia

The first gold was discovered by Europeans in Van Diemans Land in 1847 near Beaconsfield. Beaconsfield was and still is the centre of gold mining in Tasmania. The other significant deposit was at Mt Lyell and as is often the case, it was associated with a massive copper deposit. The gold, in this case, was quickly extracted while mining of the copper continued.
