Anthony J Denham
(1935 - 2023)

Anthony J Denham was born in 1935. He graduated from the University of Sydney BE(Civil) Hons in 1957.

He was a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Australia and a Member of the Association of Consulting Engineers Australia

FRom 1958 to 1994 he worked with MacDonald Wagner, then Connell Wagner, Consulting Engineers

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE

Responsible for co-ordination of the Company's international marketing programme, 1989 to 1994.

Project Director, World Bank Grain Project, China, 1993-94, for Preliminary Design of new seaboard export Terminal, at Yingkou, and inland Depots for the Provinces of Jilin and Liaoning.

Negotiation of contracts for technical assistance for the detailed design of seaboard terminals at Dalian and Yingkou, and inland depots in four Provinces in Northern China

Project Director for design and construction of a Model Grain Storage Project in Jilin Province, China, for AusAID.

Project Director for modernisation of rice mills, Myanmar, for UNDP. Study and preliminary engineering of grain storage in Egypt, for AusAID.

Marketing of two grain storage projects in Argentina, leading to major contract awards for evaluation and detailed design (IBRD financed).

Study of requirements for and economic feasibility of development of a bulk grain import terminal at Mombasa, Kenya, and related transportation and up-country storages.

Evaluation of requirements for bulk grain storages in India for AusAID.

Director responsible for the Company's consulting office in Jakarta, Indonesia, 1971 to 1976.

Design, procurement and construction supervision for a factory complex for manufacture of building material, Jakarta, Indonesia, and a pharmaceutical factory, Jakarta, Indonesia.

Site evaluation, transportation, services, port location and development and other infrastructure studies for nickel mining venture, Sulawesi, Indonesia.

All these projects involved direct hands-on work in addition to project team direction and corporate responsibility.

AUSTRALIAN EXPERIENCE.

1958 to 1978

Actively involved in the engineering and construction of Australia's bulk grain handling system.

Project Manager and design engineer for grain storages at many country locations in Western Australia and New South Wales.

Upgrades to raw materials and product stores, and mill buildings and services for various flour mills.

Design manager for grain export terminal expansions at Fremantle, Geraldton, Albany, Esperance, Western Australia.

Design engineer for conceptual planning, engineering, preliminary plant selection and cost studies for iron ore receival, storage, wharf and loading facility at East Intercourse Island, Western Australia.

Project Director for study of ship loading and railroad requirements for iron ore export, central Western Australia, including analysis of rail road operation ad berth utilisation for optimum cost effectiveness.

Project Manager for port site and railroad route selection, transportation studies, port facility planning, preliminary engineering, plant selection, port design, and cost studies for two coal export project, central Queensland.

Project Director for studies and design of silica sand export berth and loading facility, North Queensland.

Project Director for Environmental Impact Statement for coal loader and stockpiles at Port Kembla, NSW.

Design Engineer for industrial and institutional sub-division, road works, drainage and site development projects, and container parks.

1978 to 1984

Responsible for overall direction of Western Australian operations.

Projects under direction included the design and contract management of:

Increase in storage capacity by 220,000t to the Albany Grain Terminal, and new control system for the plant.

Equipment off-loading wharf for new LNG plant, Western Australia. Environmental assessment and report, Chemical Factory, Bunbury.

Ship loading facilities at Albany Grain Terminal.

Vertical silo and flat bulk storages at twenty country grain receival locations.

Dust control and mechanical upgrading to various older country storages.

Coal handling and ash disposal studies for proposed Bunbury Power Station.

Lime and alumina handling and storage projects for Pinjarra and Wagerup refineries.

Lime, coal and clinker facilities for a new lime kiln for Cockburn Cement Limited.

Assembly area and loadout wharf for offshore production modules, Jervoise Bay.

Small boat launching facility, Woodman Point.

Feed pellet mill, Kojonup.

Upgrades to various flour mills.

1985 to 1989

Managing Director, Macdonald Wagner Pty Limited. Corporate management of the national and international practice of the firm.

1989 to 1994 Chairman, Connell Wagner (NSW) Pty Ltd.

Director - Industrial Division

Project Director with Corporate responsibility for materials handling and industrial projects, which included:

Extension by 130,000 tonnes of storage with related rail receival hopper and handling and control facilities to grain terminal, Geraldton, WA. Cement receival, storage and distribution terminal, Melbourne.

Conversion of Glebe Island grain terminal to cement distribution terminal, Sydney.

Modernisation programmes to industrial, milling, food and beverages plants.

Expansion of No.3 mine, Ulan, and Eraring coal delivery facility.

Additional alumina storage, Wagerup alumina refinery.

After 1994 Tony Denham Consulting Pty Ltd - Consulting in project planning and management.

Project Director, Grain Storage Project in Jilin Province, China, for Connell Wagner.

Planning and preliminary feasibility study for a new grain terminal in Indonesia.

EXTERNAL DIRECTORSHIPS

1984 to 1986 Board Member, Export Finance and insurance Corporation, Australia.

1993-1994 Chairman, Australian Grain Technology Export Promotion Ltd (AGTEP).
