Aldis Birzulis (1934 - )

After graduating from the University of New South Wales, Aldis Birzulis joined the Department of Main Roads and was employed as an engineer on road construction and bridge design. He left the Department in 1965 to gain experience in structural engineering design in the United Kingdom and Canada. On returning to Australia in 1968, he joined consulting engineering company, Miller Milston and Ferris, becoming a director of the company in 1974. In April 1989 he established the firm of Birzulis Associates Pty Ltd.

Aldis Birzulis has had extensive design experience of building structures and in particular has led the design teams of Trade Group Office Buildings, Canberra; High Court of Australia, Canberra; Capita Centre, Sydney; Kent Street Telephone Exchange, Sydney and QV1 Building, Perth.

Aldis Birzulis has taken part in the technical activities of the Association of Consulting Engineers Australia and was a member for a number of years of the Standards Association of Australia Committee on Prestressed Concrete. He has presented a number of technical papers on concrete, structural steel and glass construction and design at national and international conferences.

Birzulis Associates Pty Ltd have provided consulting structural and civil engineering services for more than 5,500 projects ranging from school buildings, commercial developments and civic projects such as Penrith City Administration Centre, Manly Civic Library, Holroyd Civic Centre, Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre and National Gallery of Australia extensions.

Aldis Birzulis has been involved in restoration and repair of heritage buildings for many years as technical adviser to the Sydney Cove Redevelopment Authority, Sydney Foreshore Authority and the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust. Aldis Birzulis retired as a Director of Birzulis Associates Pty Ltd on 31 December 2011 but remains as a Consultant to the company.

Aldis Birzulis was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in 2017.
