Early Infrastructure
Perth and Western Australia's first first infrastructure was initially constructed by contract; and with the arrival of convicts, by the Royal Engineers. With its ready availability and durability, the materials of choice were limestone in Fremantle, clay for brick buildings in Perth and timber for bridge construction.
A comprehensive review of large timber structures in Western Australia was completed by Engineering Heritage Western Australia in 1998 and is titled Large timber structures in Western Australia. A digital copy of this review is not yet available, but a summary providing background to the review and the conclusions is available in a conference paper by one of the authors, Bruce James.
Full details of the review documents are provided in the WA Bibliography under the section titled Engineering Technology.
