CAREER
Mike’s career started with the Queensland Irrigation and Water Supply Commission in 1967, with a short interregnum with Consulting firm Rofe Kennard and Lapworth in the UK, as a Confederation of British Industry Scholar in 1973/74 and later with Australian Consulting firms Hollingsworth Consultants (1979 -1993), CMPS&F (1993 -1996), Earthtech Consultants (established by him,1996 – 2002) and Golder Associates (2002 -2016). His career covered geotechnical and environmental aspects of infrastructure development for the power, water, mining and transport industries including: Investigation and design for dams and water resource projects; mine environmental dams; road and rail infrastructure projects; dam and tailings dam safety assessments; contaminated site assessments.
Awards include:
• Queensland Professional Engineer of the Year 1995
• Honorary Fellow, Engineers Australia 2005
• Eric Brier Memorial Award, Engineers Australia
Throughout his career. He was active in professional organisations including:
• Engineers Australia sub committees and Division Committee; Queensland Division President, 1995
• Queensland Board of Professional Engineers (11 years)
• National Engineering Registration Board ( 8 years including 4 as Chair)
• Member and Chair, Industry Advisory Board, UQ School of Civil Engineering (11 years including 5 as Chair)
• Board Member RedR Australia ( 6years)
• International Commission on Large Dams , Member Technical Committee on Embankment Dams ( 11 years)
• Board member College of Engineering Leadership and Management (3 years)
Presidents Highlights 1995
Mike nominated “Engineering a Sustainable Future” as the theme for his Presidential year. Highlights of the year in terms of personal satisfaction were:
• Production and distribution of the Division’s Strategic Plan summary
• Production of the video “Engineering a Sustainable Future” highlighting engineering contributions to achieving sustainable outcomes
• Contribution to the reinstatement of Commonwealth Government funding for the Cyclone Testing Station at James Cook University
• Active participation in public debate on issues of engineering and environmental significance --- in particular the necessity for an integrated approach to planning for water resources development including promotion of wastewater purification and re-use
• Establishment of the Sustainable Cities Steering Committee to develop an understanding and acceptance within the community of the desirability of including wastewater purification and re-use in the overall water management strategy
• Establishment of Ad Hoc Committee on Hydro Power including review of proposed Tully Millstream pumped storage project
