CAREER
Steven is an Associate Professor in Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering at the University of Southern Queensland, and a Fellow of Engineers Australia. Steven is qualified in BEng (Hons) in Manufacturing & Materials at UQ, MBA (Tech Mgt) at Deakin Uni, Master of Professional Accounting at UniSQ, Diploma in Company Directorship from Australian institute of Company Directors, and Engineering Doctorate at UniSQ. He joined UniSQ as an engineering academic staff in 2006 after spending more than 10 years in the manufacturing industry in R&D, mechanical design, and business development roles.
He served within the Institution of Engineers Australia (EA) for over 25 years in various committees and boards, and similar experience as a company director in various capacities. He was on the National Board in 2015, and on National Congress of EA from 2013 to 2018. He was a recipient of a UniSQ Faculty Award for Excellence in teaching (Early Career) 2008, UniSQ Associate Fellow 2009, UniSQ Senior Fellow 2010, 2010 UniSQ Citation for contribution to Teaching and Learning, 2015 Australian Government’s Office of Learning and Teaching (OLT) Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning. He was an invited panel member for National Science Foundation in the USA in the area of engineering education. Steven was appointed in February 2016 by the Mechanical College board as the Editor-in-Chief of the Australian Journal for Mechanical Engineering (AJME).
Steven is the current President of Australasian Association for Engineering Education (AAEE) 2023-2024. He was the Conference Chair for the 30th Annual Conference for AAEE in 2019. The standout publication (Briody, Goh & Dawes, 2012) is cited in the Australian Government’s report ‘2014 Manufacturing Workforce Study’, p123. He has published 80+ papers/book chapters with thirteen (13) in Q1 journals and delivered more than twenty (20) keynotes. His research interests are in: Engineering Education, Engineering Practice, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering. Steven led the creation of a research cluster “Medical Devices and Technologies” within the Centre of Health Research at UniSQ.
Presidents Highlights 2012
As the 2012 Qld President, Steven was instrumental in navigating the profession through the 2011 Qld flood crisis, driving a strong organizational focus on member value, and enhancing EA engagement with members, the media, policy makers and academia. This has resulted in the creation of strategies such as a media engagement strategy, school-university engagement strategy, parliamentarian engagement strategy, membership communication mapping among the achievements.
He also presented three congress papers (engineering education and academia, engineering innovation, and engineering skills shortage) during his current tenure as a National Congress representative, and contributed to the debate on governance, regulations, and policy development on behalf of members. He also chaired the sub-committee on Education for the Qld Division 2013-2014 as immediate past Qld President, and at the grassroots as the co-chair of the Toowoomba Regional Group in 2014.
