Lower Molonglo Water Quality Control Centre
The plant is situated on a hill west of the Belconnen Golf Club and the suburbs of Holt and MacGregor and north of the Molonglo River. The plant reduces nutrients, nitrogen and phosphorus to low levels using physical, chemical and biological treatment processes.
These processes involve screening, addition of lime and iron chloride followed by centrifugal separation of solids which are incinerated at high temperature. The wastewater then undergoes anaerobic and aerobic treatment in biological reactors, followed by secondary clarification, filtration, chlorination and neutralisation before use for irrigation or discharge into the Molonglo River. The ash from the high temperature incineration is used as an agricultural soil conditioner.
In 1994 a bypass dam was constructed to temporarily store up to 147 million litres of screened wastewater during periods of prolonged wet weather.
