Institution of Engineers Australia, Inaugural Meeting Place

From Engineering Heritage Australia

The inaugural meeting of The Institution of Engineers Australia was held at No. 3, Elizabeth Street, Sydney. The event was commemorated in 1989 by a bronze plaque in the footpath outside the building.

When the whole block was demolished to build a City Metro station the plaque was removed for safe keeping; assurances have been given that it will be re-installed in the foyer of the new building on the site.

In 1994, to mark the 75th anniversary of the formation of The Institution of Engineers Australia, Sydney Division placed four plaques on significant sites around the city. These were never formally accepted as National Markers but are recorded as Engineering Heritage Items of Interest; The Institution of Engineers Australia, Inaugural Meeting Place is one of them.
