MIDDLETON, Howard, BE MIEAust (1900-1953)

Howard Middleton was born in Sydney on December 5, 1900, the son of bank manager, Albert Edward Charles Middleton and his wife Florence Howard Middleton, nee Toes. Howard was educated at Northam State School and Perth Modern School. His father was the Branch Manager of the Union Bank in Northam.

Middleton graduated from the University of Western Australia with an electrical engineering degree in 1923. From 1924 to 1926 he undertook further engineering studies in England on a travelling scholarship.

On March 23, 1927 he married Alice (Patsy) Smith at York, WA.

From 1930 to 1945 Middleton was the Electrical Engineer in the Electricity and Gas Department at the City of Perth, and from 1931 to 1937 a member of the University of Western Australia Senate.

He was admitted as a Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers in 1936. He had an active role in the Institution of Engineers Australia having joined as a Student Member in 1922 and gaining full membership in 1943. He was WA Division Chairman in 1944 and a National Councillor in 1945.

He replaced T M Carey as Chief Engineer of the Zinc Corporation, Broken Hill in October 1945. Middleton retired from the Zinc Corporation in 1952 and died from a heart attack whilst visiting Kalgoorlie on September 8, 1953.
