John Hill

HILL, John Dunlop Stevenson, BE FIEAust MACEA (1934-2016)

John was born in Perth, Western Australia on March 7, 1934, the son of Alfred Charles Hill and his wife Mary Elsie Dunlop Hill, nee Stevenson.

He was educated at Scotch College from 1940 to 1951 becoming School Captain. In 1952 he enrolled in First Year Engineering at the University of Western Australia completing a Bachelor of Engineering in 1956.

John initially worked in Canada returning to Western Australia in June 1961.

In 1963 he married Deanne Roslen Berry and they had three children, Mark, Donna and Cameron.

He worked with various Perth engineering consulting firms until setting up his own civil consulting engineering practice in 1978.

Peter Grant Airey had established his own practice, P G Airey and Associates in late 1971. A few years later, John Sydney Ryan became a partner and the practice became Airey, Ryan and Associates. John joined as a partner in the early 1980’s and the partnership became Airey, Ryan and Hill. Peter Airey is still associated with the current partnership of Airey Taylor Consulting Engineers and Scientists.

In 1957, John joined the Institution of Engineers as a Student Member, becoming a Member in 1962 and a Fellow by 1979. He was also a Member of the Association of Consulting Engineers, Australia being the Chair of the Western Australian Chapter from 1990 to 1992.

He died on 6 November 2016, aged 82.
