GILLESPIE John David BE FlEAust AMICE (1907-2002)

Born at Fremantle and educated at Perth Modern School, Gillespie graduated from the University of Western Australia (BE in 1932), and joined the Public Works Department as an Engineer in 1930. He became the Resident Engineer for the construction of Esperance Jetty in 1934 and for the construction of No.10 wharf at Fremantle in 1954.

Appointed the Principal Assistant Engineer in the Harbours and Rivers Branch under N J Henry (RN) in 1959, Gillespie became Engineer for Harbours and Rivers in 1965. He was Chairman of the Western Australian Division of the Institution of Engineers Australia in 1962, Deputy Chairman of the Swan River Conservation Board from 1968 to 1972, and the inaugural Chairman of the Waterways Commission between 1977 and 1979. He was elected an associate member in 1939 and a member of the Institution of Engineers Australia in 1959.

His published papers include ‘Beach erosion and restoration works at Perth WA' JIES 37,1965, p137, and 'Development of the Port of Albany', 1972.

J D Gillespie died at Claremont on February 3, 2002.
