Allan Bennett
BENNETT, Allan, ME BCE FIEAust (1902-1984)
Born in Drummoyne, NSW on April 12, 1902 but a graduate of Melbourne University, Bennett moved to Western Australia where he joined the Public Works Department as an Assistant Engineer in the Harbours and Rivers Branch in 1924. He became Superintendent of Works for the Fremantle Harbour Trust in 1934. He was also Chairman of the Nedlands Road Board.
During World War 2 he achieved the rank of Major, commanding the 56th Field Park Company, the 2/3rd Railway Construction Company, and then the 25th Mechanical Park Company. In 1945 he was appointed as the Launceston Marine Board Engineer. In November 1949 he transferred to the Harbours Branch of the Public Works Department of New South Wales as Construction Engineer returning to Western Australia in 1973. He was elected an associate member of the Institution of Engineers Australia in 1929, and a member of this institution in 1945.
His published papers include The tides at Fremantle WA, JIEA 11, 1939; and Tides in the Swan River Estuary, JIEA 12, 1940, which described some of the work submitted towards the requirements of the degree of Master of Engineering in 1943. He also had articles on manufacturing and driving concrete piles published by the Tasmanian Institution of Engineers in 1948 and in the Dock and Harbour Authority, London.
He died at North Fremantle on March 22, 1984 having married twice (Mary Hay Dalling and Gloria Dermer)
