On 30 June 1983 the Country Roads Board was succeeded by the Road Construction Authority, established under the provisions of the Transport Act 1983.

1983 Transport Act 1983 (No.9921) was enacted on 1 July 1983. This created a Ministry of Transport, a State Transport Authority, a Metropolitan Transit Authority, a Road Construction Authority, and a Road Traffic Authority.
