George Gavriel Laron

George Gavriel Laron was born on 6 February 1929 in Budapest, Hungary. His early schooling was in a state primary school, then to a technical high school run by the Jewish community. He did the first couple of years of engineering study in Budapest but left Hungary in 1949, on foot, with his future wife Eve Mirjam Biro, (See Eve Laron in this list.), walking to Czechoslovakia, then Austria where they were married before moving to Israel for six years. During these years his engineering studies were suspended.
George and Eve migrated to Sydney in 1955 and he took up studying engineering again, part time, at the University of NSW, graduating in civil engineering in 1961. During these years he had been employed by various consulting engineering practices so that upon formal qualification he was engaged as Design Engineer and then an Associate with Woolacott, Hale, Bond & Corlett.
From 1968 to 1974 he was a partner with Bond, James, Laron and Reid; from 1974 to 1982 a director of Bond, James, Laron Pty Ltd and from 1982 to 1988 a director of Bond, James, Laron & Murtagh Pty Ltd. With the retirement of two of the directors in 1988 the firm was wound up and Laron became the principal of George Laron Associates, Consulting Engineers.
During his career he was responsible for a large variety of projects both in size and kind, ranging through residential, educational, commercial and industrial projects. Specific projects were the NSW Institute of Technology tower in Broadway, the Acoustics Laboratory in Chatswood, the redevelopment of Liverpool Hospital, Calvary Hospital in the ACT and the Power House Museum in Sydney.
In the later years of his career the business was wound down and handled mainly residential and smaller size commercial and industrial work and the preparation of reports.
Eve, who was an architect in Sydney, and George had one son, Michael. Eve Laron died in 2009 but George lived until 26 October 2024 and reached the age of 95.
