Tharwa Bridge, Murrumbidgee River

From Engineering Heritage Australia

This first permanent bridge over the upper Murrumbidgee joined communities on both sides of the river, provided secure passenger and freight transport to Sydney (SYD) by connection to adjacent railway and direct access south into the Monaro grazing lands and Kiandra goldfields.

The four central truss spans survive from the original bridge. They are oldest examples in service of the standard Allan truss (27.5m length) first designed in 1893 specifically for Australian materials and conditions by Percy Allan of NSW Public Works Department.
