Stuart Highway North

From Engineering Heritage Australia

The 1870 track on the Overland Telegraph route, upgraded by the exceptional efforts of Australia Road Agency’s during WWII providing an all weather sealed road for military convoys to supply men and materials to defend the North.

The first stage of the work was the upgrading of the road from Alice Springs to Tennant Creek which commenced in 1940.

The WWII road has been upgraded to National Highway standard. Examples of each era of construction remain in use, a testament to the efforts of the surveyors, engineers and construction workers who battled the environment and overcame the remoteness of the North to link Darwin with Australia by road.
